- The international financial crisis caused major political turmoil in Latvia. Godmanis survived a confidence vote (yes: 51, no: 40) on 3 February 2009. However, following coalition internal conflicts the People's Party as well as the Green and Farmers' Union demanded the resignation of the prime minister and he stepped down on 20 February 2009.
