- Brandt I cabinet lost its legislative majority after several FDP MPs crossed the floor. Opposition leader Barzel (CDU) initiated a constructive vote of no-confidence (yes: 247, no: 10, abstain: 3, total: 260) on 27 April 1972 to be elected as chancellor but gained no majority support. Brandt called for a vote of confidence (yes: 233, no: 248, abstain: 1) on 20 September 1972 to allow for a dissolution of parliament and new elections.
